The Prophet Mohamed RasoolAllah (p.b.u.h., May the peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) said,
"Whoever wishes to fast (on the day of 'Ashura') may do so; and whoever wishes to leave it can do so."

Prophet Muhammad(p.b.u.h., May the peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) affirmed the Islamic claim to the fast, and subsequently it was made mandatory for the Muslims to fast on combinations of two or three consecutive days including the 10th of Muharram (e.g. 9th and 10th or 10th and 11th)[8][9].

Today, Sunnis regard fasting during Ashura as recommended, though not obligatory, having been superseded by the Ramadan fast.

What the Shia's from Iran, Irak doese in the day of Ashura, has nothing to do with Islam(Islam forbidden to make heroes or celebrate a hero. to be proud is action of devil and action of all other religions then Islam). And has nothing to do with Sunnah of Prophet Mohamed(p.b.u.h., May the peace & blessings of Allah be upon him) because the people used to fast on 'Ashura (the tenth day of the month of Muharram) before the fasting of Ramadan was made obligatory.
